What is Pensez?
Pensez is the annual case study competition organized by the Entrepreneurship Cell, IIT Kharagpur. Pensez 2009 aims to develop Innovative Carbon Financing schemes for clean development at the BoP

What is a case study?
Case studies are written summaries or syntheses of real-life cases based upon data and research. They provide a systematic way of looking at events, collecting data, analyzing information, and reporting the results.

Ok, but how do I present a case study?
A case study has two components, a Report and a Dossier. Here are a few items that should be included or at least touched on in a case study analysis:

  • Basic information about the company, industry, project or event featured in the case study.
  • An analysis of its dynamics and statistics.
  • A summary of the assumptions and methodologies adopted while conducting the study.

What are dossiers and report?
Reports provide a summary of the fieldwork and findings while the Dossier is an archive of reprints, graphs, survey data, results etc. Think of the dossier as all the raw data you collated and the report as what you inferred from it after due analysis. We will need both to be submitted when required.

I am at a loss when it comes to finding the relevant information for the study... Could you point me in the right direction?
We have a dedicated resource section on our website which we keep updating frequently to aid in your preparation. As a reminder, googling always serves the purpose well too!

What is BoP?

In economics, the bottom of the pyramid is the largest, but poorest socio-economic group. In global terms, this is the four billion people who live on less than $2 per day, typically in developing countries. The phrase “bottom of the pyramid” is used in particular by people developing new models of doing business that deliberately target that demographic, often using new technology. This field is also often referred to as the "Base of the Pyramid" or just the "BoP".Recently, the term next billion is coined to refer to this group.

What are carbon credits?

The Kyoto Protocol has created a mechanism under which countries that have been emitting more carbon and other gases (greenhouse gases include ozone, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and even water vapour) have voluntarily decided that they will bring down the level of carbon they are emitting to the levels of early 1990s. Any company, factories or farm owner in India can get linked to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and know the 'standard' level of carbon emission allowed for its outfit or activity. The extent to which I am emitting less carbon (as per standard fixed by UNFCCC) I get credited in a developing country. This is called carbon credit. These credits are bought over by the companies of developed countries -- mostly Europeans -- because the United States has not signed the Kyoto Protocol.

Do I have to come to IIT Kharagpur for participating? If yes, how will you be assisting me?
You need to be present at IIT Kharagpur only if you qualify for the final round where you have to give a presentation of your case study in front of a panel of judges. Preliminary rounds have online submission, so you needn’t worry about your travel plans. If you plan to come by train or fly down, then better book the tickets early and keep your fingers crossed!

If you register with us early, we will provide you accommodation. However, no reimbursement of travelling expense will be made.

How do I know if I won (or did not)?

Results will be uploaded on the website & on the blog on the mentioned dates, also information regarding the next round will be provided to you as soon as the results will be declared.
